A used Tesla Model S and X pyrotechnic disconnect, part 1077177-00-E. The device that severs the high voltage circuit explosively when the car detects a crash.
This is not a fuse and it does not behave like one. A pyrotechnic disconnect contains a small explosive charge. On a fire command from the restraints controller, that charge drives a cutter through the busbar and physically severs the high voltage circuit in about a millisecond, far faster than any contactor or fuse can act. It is the same class of device as an airbag initiator, and it exists for the same moment.
Read this before ordering, because it is a used pyrotechnic device. Three things follow from that and none of them are in the original listing:
- It is single use. Once fired it is spent, and a spent unit is an open circuit. We cannot warrant that a salvaged unit has not been fired without destroying it to check.
- Pyrotechnic devices have a service life. Like airbag initiators, they are typically life limited by the manufacturer. A unit recovered from an older vehicle may be beyond that life even if it has never fired.
- It needs the right firing signal. It is not something you switch. It requires a squib driver providing a defined current pulse, normally from a restraints controller that has decided a crash is happening.
Where a used unit makes sense: development work, bench testing of a firing circuit, packaging and fitment studies, or as a physical reference. Where it does not: as the live crash protection in a vehicle that will carry people. For that, fit a new unit with known provenance and within its service life. This is the component whose only job happens once, in the worst moment, and you will never get a second chance to find out it was past its date.
