Wurth CU800 copper terminal paste, 20 grams. A conductive anti corrosion grease for busbar and terminal joints.
Every bolted electrical joint is two metal faces pressed together, and the problem is what happens at that interface over time. Air and moisture reach the edges of the contact area, the metal oxidises, and oxide is a far worse conductor than the metal it came from. The joint's resistance creeps up, resistance makes heat, heat accelerates the oxidation, and a connection that was fine for two years becomes a hot spot in the third.
Copper paste fills the microscopic gaps in the interface so there is no air at the contact faces to start that process. It stays put through heat cycling and it does not harden.
It also makes the joint come apart again. A dry steel fastener into aluminium or copper, heat cycled for years, seizes. Copper paste on the threads is what lets a pack be serviced rather than drilled out, which matters on anything you intend to maintain.
Use very little. A thin film on the contact face is what is wanted. Paste is not a conductor in its own right and a thick layer holds the faces apart rather than bringing them together.
Key specifications
| Manufacturer part | Wurth CU800 |
|---|---|
| Type | Copper terminal paste and anti seize |
| Size | 20 g |
| Properties | Highly adhesive, high temperature and high pressure resistant |
| Weight | 0.03 kg |
Features
- Excludes air from the contact interface, which is what stops oxidation starting
- Stays put through heat cycling and does not harden
- Doubles as an anti seize, so joints can be undone years later
- A 20 g tube covers a great many joints, because very little is needed
Compatibility
For battery busbar joints, busbar to terminal, lug to terminal, and conductive lubrication generally. Also for assemblies that will be taken apart and put back together.
A thin film, not a coating. Apply it to the contact face, assemble, and torque normally. Excess squeezes out and does nothing useful.
It does not replace a correctly torqued joint. Paste stops the interface oxidising; clamping force is what makes the connection. Torque to specification and re-check after the first heat cycle.
In the box
- 1 x 20 g tube of CU800 copper paste
