A converted car still needs a way to choose direction, and it needs one the driver can use without thinking. Reusing the original automatic selector is often impossible and a pair of toggle switches is not something you want a stranger operating. This gives you the three positions an electric drivetrain actually has, in a knob that looks like it belongs in a car.

The LED is the point, not decoration. An electric drivetrain is silent and gives the driver nothing to tell them which way it will move. Selecting D when you meant R is a genuine hazard in a car with no engine note and instant torque, and lit position feedback is what prevents it.

Compatibility

For any conversion whose controller takes discrete forward, neutral and reverse inputs, which is most of them.

Check what your inverter or vehicle controller expects before wiring: some want a switched 12 V on the selected line, others want a switch to ground. The selector suits either, but it has to be wired for the one yours uses.
