A four piece kit that converts a Tesla large drive unit from two CV half shafts to a single propshaft flange, so the motor can drive a standard live axle or a transfer case. The gearbox is opened and the parts fit inside it. No cutting, drilling or fabrication is needed, and the drive unit does not have to be sent anywhere.
A Tesla large drive unit was designed to sit across the car and send drive out through two CV joints. Almost every classic or kit car being converted has the opposite layout: an axle at the back and a propshaft running to it. That mismatch is normally solved by fabricating an adapter, which means shipping a 136 kg drive unit to a machine shop. This kit solves it inside the existing casing instead, and puts a conventional four bolt flange on the output. All of the torque that was split between two half shafts then goes through one shaft.
The flange dimensions are published below and in the drawing in the Documents tab, so a propshaft specialist can build the shaft to length while the kit is still in transit rather than after the drive unit is already in the car.

Features
- Fits inside the standard gearbox casing, so no cutting, drilling or fabrication is required and the drive unit never leaves your workshop
- Gives a conventional four bolt flange on a 101.6 mm bolt circle, which any propshaft specialist can work to
- Puts the full output through one shaft instead of splitting it between two CV joints
- Suits a live rear axle directly, or a transfer case for permanent four wheel drive
- Published flange drawing, so the propshaft can be made before the kit arrives
- Full assembly video, so the work can be checked before committing to the purchase
Compatibility
Check your differential before ordering. There is a rare four spider differential fitted to some large drive units that this kit does not fit. The assembly video shows the differential the kit is designed around. Compare yours against it before buying, and ask us if you are unsure.
Suits the large drive unit from the Tesla Model S and Model X. Mount the drive unit longitudinally, fit the kit, and add a propshaft made to the flange dimensions above.
If the car is going to see motorway speeds, consider the gearing. Unmodified, the drive unit is 9.73:1 with the motor turning up to 18,000 rpm, which suits low speed use far better than cruising. The 4.1:1 gear set changes that, and can be fitted at the same time as this kit while the gearbox is already open. Doing both jobs in one strip is the reason most people buy them together.
In the box
- 1 x four piece driveshaft adapter kit
The propshaft, the drive unit and the gear set are not included.
