An M8 open ended round rivet nut in stainless steel.
Fasteners in a high voltage build are not generic hardware. A bolt through a busbar carries current. A bolt into an enclosure holds a seal. A bolt into a mount takes drive torque. In each case the wrong material, the wrong head or the wrong length is a fault that only shows up later, and usually somewhere awkward to reach.
A rivet nut puts a threaded hole in something too thin to tap. Sheet metal, a panel, a box section you cannot reach the back of: you drill a hole, set the rivet nut into it with a tool that pulls and collapses its body, and you are left with a captive M8 thread that can be undone and done up repeatedly.
The alternative is usually worse. A self tapping screw into thin sheet strips out. A nut and bolt needs access to both sides, which a box section does not give you. A welded nut needs welding and destroys the coating around it. A rivet nut needs a drill and a setting tool.
Key specifications
| Part | M8RRIVNUTSS |
|---|---|
| Type | Rivet nut, round, open ended |
| Thread | M8 |
| Drive | Set with a rivet nut tool |
| Material | Stainless steel |
| Sold as | Individually |
Features
- Creates a captive M8 thread in material too thin to tap
- Set from one side only, so a box section or closed panel is no obstacle
- Stainless, so it does not become the corrosion point in a steel panel
- Repeatedly undone and refitted, unlike a self tapper
Compatibility
For M8 fixings into sheet metal, panel and box section. You will need a rivet nut setting tool and the correct hole size, which depends on the rivet nut body rather than the thread.
Check the length against your stack before ordering. A bolt that bottoms out in a blind hole feels tight while clamping nothing, and one that is too short engages too few threads to hold. Count the thickness of everything the bolt passes through, plus the depth it needs in the thread.
In the box
- 1 x M8 rivet nut
