The MOD-WIFI-ESP8266 is a UEXT expansion module that features the popular ESP8266 UART to Wi-Fi IC. This module enables you to add Wi-Fi functionality to other Olimex development boards that have a UEXT connector. It comes equipped with 2MB of SPI flash memory.
The purpose of the MOD-WIFI-ESP8266 is to serve as a simple hardware expansion for existing Olimex boards, which is why it includes the UEXT connector. You can connect it to another board with a UEXT connector, completing the hardware setup. As shown in the schematics, the MOD-WIFI-ESP8266 only uses the first four pins of the UEXT connector: #1 (3.3 Vcc), #2 (GND), #3 (RXD), and #4 (TXD), meaning it supports a data UART interface only. The remaining pins are not routed for easy access—if additional signals are needed, you may want to consider using the MOD-WIFI-ESP8266-DEV or ESP8266-EVB. A button is provided to program the board.
