A Nagares RL/180-12 heavy duty normally open relay, 12 volt. A general purpose automotive relay for switching loads that an ordinary switch cannot carry.
A relay exists so the switch never carries the current. A cooling fan, a coolant pump, a heater blower or a horn draws far more than a dashboard switch or a controller output is rated for. Running that load through the switch is how switches burn out and how dashboards catch fire. The relay takes the load; the switch just tells the relay what to do.
Normally open means the circuit is dead until the relay is energised, which is the safe default for almost everything on a vehicle. The load is off when nothing is driving it, including when the wiring to the coil fails.
Heavy duty matters where the load has an inrush. A motor or a lamp draws several times its running current at the instant it starts, and a relay sized only for the running current welds its contacts over time. Nagares build for automotive service rather than general purpose use.
Key specifications
| Manufacturer part | Nagares RL/180-12 |
|---|---|
| Type | Heavy duty automotive relay |
| Contact arrangement | Normally open |
| Coil voltage | 12 V |
| Weight | 0.01 kg |
Features
- Keeps load current out of switches and controller outputs
- Normally open, so the load is off unless something is actively driving it
- Heavy duty construction, for loads with an inrush
- Automotive grade rather than general purpose
Compatibility
For 12 V automotive loads: cooling fans, coolant pumps, heater blowers, lighting and auxiliary circuits.
This is a low voltage relay. It must never be used to switch anything at pack potential. High voltage DC needs a proper contactor with arc suppression, because a relay asked to break HV DC welds or burns.
Fuse the load, not just the coil. A relay protects the switch, not the wiring beyond it.
Ask us for the contact rating before you design it in. No datasheet is published here, and the continuous and inrush ratings are what you need to size it properly.
