The ready made cell voltage tap harness for an Orion BMS 2. It arrives with the twenty way connector already terminated at the BMS end and numbered, bare ended wires at the other, so the only wiring to do is at the cells.

Choose the cell count to match how your BMS is populated. An Orion 2 is built up in banks of twelve cells, and each bank has its own tap connector. So a unit populated for twelve cells takes one harness, twenty four takes two banks' worth, and thirty six takes three. Order the harness that matches the unit you have, not the number of cells in the pack, because a 36 cell unit monitoring 30 cells still needs the full set of connectors.

Choose the length by the furthest tap, not the nearest. Six foot covers most packs where the BMS sits on or beside the battery box. Twelve foot is for a BMS mounted away from the pack, or a pack split across two boxes. The wires cannot be extended sensibly once terminated, so measure the longest run before ordering.

Check the harness before you connect the BMS. Cell taps are the one part of an Orion installation where a wiring error is expensive rather than inconvenient: the unit reads cell voltages through these wires, and a crossed or shorted pair can damage it on first power up. A cell tap validation tool checks the whole loom against the pack before the BMS is ever plugged in. It is worth using on any pack you have not wired before.

Key specifications

FitsOrion BMS 2
Cell taps12, 24 or 36, selectable above
Length6 ft, about 1.8 m, or 12 ft, about 3.7 m
Wire22 AWG stranded, individually numbered
BMS endTwenty way cell tap connector, already terminated
Cell endBare wires, to be terminated to suit your tap points
ProtectionConvoluted split tubing over the bundled section
FusingNot fitted. Fuse the taps as your installation requires

Features

  • Connector end arrives terminated, so the fiddly crimping into a twenty way housing is already done
  • Every wire is numbered, so taps can be identified at the pack end without buzzing the loom out
  • Convoluted tubing over the bundle, so the run can be clipped along a box edge without chafing
  • Six lengths and cell counts, matching the way an Orion 2 is populated rather than a single compromise length

Compatibility

For the Orion BMS 2 in any of its cell counts. One harness serves one bank of twelve taps, so pair it with how your unit is populated.

Most installations also need the main input and output harness for the BMS itself, and a current sensor harness for the shunt and thermistors. A CAN adaptor is what you will use to configure the unit and read it back.

The Junior uses a different harness and is not covered by this one.

In the box

  • 1 x cell tap harness in the length and cell count selected

Ring terminals, fuses and the cell end hardware are not included.

Downloads

No datasheet is published for the harness itself. The wiring rules that matter, including tap ordering and what to do about unused inputs, are in the Orion BMS 2 wiring manual, and we are happy to talk through a pack layout before you order.
