The hall effect current sensor an Orion BMS uses to measure pack current. The cable passes through it, so nothing is broken into and nothing carries the pack current except the cable itself.

Current is the one thing a BMS cannot work out for itself. It reads every cell voltage directly, but voltage alone will not tell it how much charge has left the pack. State of charge, the charge and discharge limits it hands to the inverter and the charger, and the cumulative record of what the pack has done all rest on an accurate current measurement. Get the sensor wrong and every number downstream is wrong with it.

Size it to your maximum current, not your average. A sensor is most accurate across the middle of its range, so one that is far too large loses resolution at everyday currents, and one that is too small clips exactly when the reading matters most. Choose the smallest option that comfortably covers your worst case, including regenerative braking and fast charging.

Key specifications

TypeHall effect current sensor, pass through
RangesPlus or minus 200 A, 500 A, 800 A or 1000 A
ApertureLarge enough to pass 4/0 AWG
TemperatureStable across the full automotive range
SealingSealed for harsh environments
GradeAutomotive
ConnectorSold separately
Works withOrion BMS and Orion BMS 2

Features

  • Pass through design, so the pack cable is never broken into or reterminated
  • Bidirectional, reading charge and discharge as positive and negative
  • Four ranges, so the sensor can be matched to the pack rather than the other way round
  • Aperture takes up to 4/0 AWG, which covers the heaviest cable most conversions use
  • Sealed and automotive grade, for mounting inside a pack enclosure

Compatibility

For the Orion BMS and Orion BMS 2. Larger sensors than 1000 A can be supplied as a special order, so ask if your pack needs one.

The connector is a separate part. The sensor ships without it, so add one to your order unless you already have it.

Mount it on the main pack cable, where all the current passes, and with the cable running squarely through the aperture. A cable lying against one side of the opening reads differently from one centred in it.
