A Tesla battery module, 5.3 kWh and 230 amp hours, built from 444 18650 cells in a 74P6S arrangement. Nominal 22.8 volts, 25 kilograms.

212 watt hours per kilogram is why these modules are still sought after. That is a high energy density for a module you can buy second hand, and it is the reason a Model S pack built from them was competitive for as long as it was. For a conversion where weight matters, it is a meaningful number.

The discharge figures are the other reason. 1500 amps for three seconds from a module of this size is exceptional, and it is what allows a pack built from them to deliver the performance the donor car had. Most modules in this price range cannot do that.

74 cells in parallel per group is worth understanding. It means a single cell failing open barely changes the group, which makes the module tolerant, and it means your BMS needs only six cell taps per module rather than one per cell.

Low module voltage makes assembly safer. At 22.8 volts nominal a single module is not a shock hazard, so modules are handled and wired individually and the high voltage system only exists once they are in series.

Features

  • 212 Wh per kg, a high energy density for a module at this price
  • 1500 A peak discharge, so a pack can deliver real performance
  • 74 cells in parallel per group, so a single cell failure barely affects the module
  • Six cell taps per module, so BMS wiring stays manageable
  • Under 25 V per module, so assembly is done at low voltage

Compatibility

For EV conversions, high performance builds and energy storage.

It needs a BMS. The module has no protection of its own, and at these discharge currents that is not negotiable.

Plan the cooling before you plan the performance. A module capable of 1500 amps produces heat in proportion, and the discharge figures assume the thermal management to go with them.

Six modules gives roughly 137 V nominal, sixteen gives around 365 V. The 22.8 V increment makes pack voltage straightforward to arrive at.
