A Tesla Model 3 rear drive unit, standard specification. Motor, inverter and reduction gearbox in one assembly.
The Model 3 rear unit is the current benchmark for a conversion drivetrain. It is a permanent magnet machine rather than the induction motor of the earlier large drive unit, which means noticeably better efficiency, particularly at the light loads a car spends most of its life at. It is also more compact and lighter for the output.
Motor, inverter and gearbox in one casing is the practical advantage. There is no separate inverter to mount and cool, no three phase cable run to shield and route, and no coupling or adaptor plate between motor and gearbox. What has to be packaged is one object with one set of mounts.
Control is the work. Like every salvaged drive unit, it expects to be told what to do by the car it came from. Running one in a conversion means an aftermarket controller or gateway that can command it, and that is the part of the project to solve before buying anything else.
Talk to us before ordering. At this price, and with the rest of the build depending on how the unit is controlled, mounted and cooled, it is worth confirming the plan first.

Compatibility
For conversions with the space and the engineering to package a complete rear drive unit.
You will need a way to control it. This is the single biggest question on a Model 3 drive unit and it should be answered before purchase, not after.
You will also need driveshafts. The Model 3 output spline is not one that shafts are readily available for; our driveshaft joint kit supplies the stump and tripod joint that a shop can build shafts from.
And cooling. A drive unit of this output is liquid cooled and expects to be.
