An open source control board for the Tesla large drive unit. It replaces the original Tesla logic so the inverter and motor can be run in a car that is not a Tesla, under a controller you can see inside.
The drive unit is the easy part of a Tesla swap. The control is the hard part. The hardware is excellent and widely available, but its original logic board expects to be told what to do by a Tesla, over a network that is not yours and will not cooperate. Everything else in the swap waits on solving that.
This board solves it with open source firmware. That is a genuine difference rather than a label: the behaviour of the thing controlling your motor is inspectable, and it is supported by a community rather than by one supplier's release schedule. If you want to understand exactly how your torque request becomes current in the motor, you can read it.
It is not a plug and play product. Running a large drive unit on an open source board means configuring it, tuning it, and understanding what you are changing. The people who do this successfully are comfortable with CAN, with firmware, and with the idea that commissioning is part of the build rather than a five minute job at the end.
Key specifications
| Part | LDUBOARD |
|---|---|
| Type | Inverter control board, open source |
| Fits | Tesla large drive unit |
| Firmware | Open source |
| Replaces | The original Tesla logic board |
| Weight | 0.08 kg |
Features
- Runs a Tesla large drive unit in a non Tesla vehicle
- Open source firmware, so the control strategy is inspectable and community supported
- Direct replacement for the original logic board
- Works with the 23 pin data interface board where the drive unit's data connector is damaged
Compatibility
For Tesla large drive unit conversions.
If your drive unit's 23 pin data connector was damaged during removal, the 23 pin data interface board repairs it and is designed to work with this board specifically.
This is a board for people who will commission it themselves. If you want a supported, closed, configure and go controller, that is a different kind of product and we would rather point you at one than sell you this.
Talk to us before ordering. There is no datasheet or installation guide published here, and what you need to know depends on which drive unit you have and what you are putting it in.
