The Quaife ATB helical limited slip differential for the Tesla small drive unit, as used in the Model S and Model X. The QDH3T replaces the standard open differential inside the unit and is the traction upgrade we fit as standard to the small drive units we rebuild.
An open differential sends torque to whichever wheel has least grip, so in a conversion one wheel spins while the other does nothing useful. The Quaife ATB biases torque continuously towards the wheel that still has grip, and it does it on helical gears rather than clutch plates, so it never locks and there is no pre-load to set. Nothing inside it wears in service: it runs on the drive unit's own oil, keeps the standard maintenance schedule and works with electronic traction and stability control rather than fighting it.

Quaife do not publish a dimensioned drawing for the QDH3T. If you need mating dimensions for a fitment check, ask us and we will get them from the factory.
Features
- Torque goes to the wheel with grip instead of the one that is spinning, which is what makes a heavy conversion usable on a loose or wet surface
- Never locks. The action is progressive and silent, including at parking speeds, with none of the snatch of a plate type LSD
- Gear operated, so there are no clutch packs, ramps or springs to wear out and nothing to replace at intervals
- Runs on the drive unit's standard oil and keeps its normal maintenance schedule
- Works alongside electronic traction and stability control rather than confusing it
- Direct replacement for the factory open differential, with no machining of the housing
- Backed by Quaife's lifetime warranty, for motorsport as well as road use
Compatibility
Fits the Tesla small drive unit. The unit has to be split to fit it, so it is worth renewing the output shaft seals in the same strip rather than going back in for them later.
For the other Tesla units we stock the Quaife QDH2T for the large drive unit and the QDH7T for the Model 3 rear drive unit. If you want a fixed spool rather than a limited slip differential, the QDH4T is the Model S alternative.
These are built to order at Quaife in batches and the factory lead time runs to several months, so availability moves in steps rather than continuously. If the page shows none in stock, ask us where the next batch is before you look elsewhere.
In the box
- 1 x Quaife QDH3T ATB differential
The differential only. Crown wheel bolts, bearings and seals are not included, so reuse the originals or order them separately.
